I have a new friend!
Or I will have a new friend once his quarantine period is over, I think that is next week. They were calling him BamBam at the store but Melly and Coral didn’t like that. Coral came up with the name Bakersfield, apparently out of thin air and Melly liked it that so now that is his new name!
Bakersfield is a two-year-old male rat who was abandoned by his owner. Melly asked why his owners gave him up and the guy said, “Maybe they had to move or something.” So Melly said, “Did they take their kids?” The PetCo guy said he didn’t know if they took their kids but I bet they did. And they just left little Bakersfield at the store without even telling them what his name was.
I can sympathize with Bake’s story, the same thing basically happened to me. So far, I’m glad Melly took me in and I think Bakersfield will be glad too, once he settles into our house. Melly says he can ride on my back maybe. You can see he already knows how to ride on people’s shoulders.
Well, I guess that’s all I have to say right now because we don’t really know him yet. He does have a cute nose, which should help him fit in here. Maple, Oakley and I all have adorable noses and Coral’s nose isn’t too bad either. I’m not going to mention Melly’s nose except to say there is a reason I sometimes call her Smelly. I’m just saying, I bet she has a great sense of smell with that nose of hers, if you know what I mean.
You can vote on relative nose cuteness in the poll on the right side bar.
I’m a little scared to ask, but whatever happened to Hello Pineapple?
How cute! Rats are the best. If Bakersfield really is two, he is a senior citizen who may soon need some extra special care. I know he will have a great new life now with Melly and Gari and the gang.
Oh, welcome Bake! We had a rat here once that looked very much hike you, her name was JakMac. Enjoy your new home there, and I look forward to hearing of you adventures. Rock on!
Jen, Hello Pineapple passed after battling pneumonia. She is sorely missed.
Welcome, Bakersfield! You are a very handsome rat!
I am so sad to hear about Hello Pineapple! Melly, what happened to her? I mean, do you know how she got pneumonia? That is so sad. :’-(
Oh Bakerfield is adorable, he looks just like my rattie Elwood! Welcome cutie! 🙂
Stacy got a gerbil at Petco that had been abandoned there. Walnut was a very sweet little pet, unlike Darth, the Gerbil From Hell who lives with us now.
Hello Pineapple had been sick for several weeks as a baby and the vet said that she may *always* have had pneumonia and that it was dormant. She was a very, very small guinea pig, which I think not only reflected that earlier illness but made it much harder to combat its recurrence. She did not have much weight to lose before it became critical. (Melanie)
Welcome Bakersfield!!! I can’t wait to hear about the adventures you and Gari are going to have. I voted for your cute little nose, since you are the newbie & didn’t want you to feel left out. But Gari you nose is adorable too!!!
OMG! Soooooo cute! I’m glad you took him in. I had a rat. She was the best pet. In fact, I was planning on getting three or four as babbies as pets when my guina pig walked into my life… I’ve got Alfalfa now. He’s a great (but loud) guinea pig. Rats are the best!
Bakersfield remind me of a rat I had many years ago. Looks like his twin and boy was he a great pet. You will have so much fun with one another once you get used to each other. Really a handsome boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
I’m going to have to go with Coral’s nose on this one. Sorry, rodents.
Welcome, Bakersfield! I hope you will enjoy meeting your new friends at Melly’s house. You are a sharp dresser and are probably very smart too. Try not to tease the bunnies too much.
Aaaaawwww!! Bakersfield, you’re such a cutie! You have such pretty round eyes and well, sorry Gari, your nose is cute but I have voted for Bakersfield’s!
I’m sure Bakersfield will learn pretty soon to ride on Gari’s back. It will be a sight to see!! 😀
I never had a rat as a pet, but I’ve heard they make excelent and clever pets.
And surely Melly will take very good care of you.
Hello Baker…welcome to the clan! You couldn’t ask for a better home.
I love all sorts of rodents and small furry creatures! Rats are great! My daughter had a rat when she was in middle school – his name was Gary! Bakersfield is one lucky rattakin. So cute!
So very sorry to hear about Hello Pineapple. 🙁
Bakersfield, you are a cutie patootie! I’m sure you will make an awesome co-pet!
I’m very sorry to her about Hello Pineapple. I live somewhat near a town named Bakersfield. the rodent bakersfield is very cute. I have heard that rats are very smart, and so i am sure that Bakersfield will recognize Gari as a friend which he can trust and ride.
I’m so sorry about Hello Pineapple. 🙁 I just lost a pig who also had recurring lung issues. At least they’re no longer suffering.
And good on you guys for taking in Bakersfield; he’ll have a good home with you all. I sincerely hope he never gets loose, though–we had a rat problem a while back and even as a rodent lover I was terrified when I saw one darting around on the floor!
Aww, Bakersfield is adorable! I had pet rats in high school and college, they are the greatest. And Melly, I’ll be IN Bakersfield, CA next week. Nice coincidence!
Awwwwwww! We had 23 rats at one point. They are fabulous pets and great friends. Very much like dogs, only tiny. I loved all my rats dearly. We created a PVC run for them. Home Depot sells wide PVC with holes in it for yard drainage cheap. We bought PVC elbows and T connectors and had it going up across the curtain rods, under desks and across the floor. The rats could not get out. They peeked out the holes like an airplane. Every once in a while you have to take it all outside and hose it down. The boys got too big for it, but the girls had a blast!
He is sooo cute! Thanks for sharing your story with me at lunch Sat. during BlogPaws! Ive had many rats and each have their own fun and unique personalities! Have fun with Bakersfield!
