San Diego Zoo Capybaras

The Plushes head to the San Diego Zoo

Owner’s Blog:

I was out in California last week to visit my sister and I couldn’t pass up the chance to visit the world famous San Diego Zoo. Last time I was there, about five years ago, they did not have capybaras but I knew that they had a band of them now and I couldn’t wait to see them. Of course, I brought my two plush capybaras, Capycoppy (left) and Super Capy (right) with me. I also brought Double Decoy, the guinea pig in the middle. There’s nothing like going around taking photos of plush animals in a crowded area to make you feel crazy.

Capysaurus rex

Me, Sheldon and Coral at The Dino Park

Melly has got this thing about “science.” She’s always talking all scientific and logical and trying to learn new scientific facts and claiming science is fun and enlightening. Sometimes she even claims I am science, which I totally am. How could a person not look at me and admire my marvelous adaptations to a semi-aquatic environment? How could they not look at my adorable face and see how closely I resemble an overgrown guinea pig? Still, I do not love science to the same extent she does and I’d just as soon not think about certain aspects of it, specifically predators. And of all the predators I don’t like to think about, I really don’t like to think about dinosaurs. Even the ones that aren’t predators. Even the small ones. They are all scary.

So I wasn’t too excited when she told me we were going to The Dinosaur Park in Bastrop, TX.

Farewell Stripe!

Stripe tries to decide if corn is cat food

This is a sad and a happy story. The funny thing is, the sad and the happy parts are the very same parts. I’m not a genius, I’m just a capybara, so I’m not even going to try to figure that out. All I have to say is that Stripe doesn’t live with us anymore — not that he ever did to hear Melly tell it.

The Rodent Robber

Squirrels are rodents and I'm a rodent

There are a lot of squirrels around my house. They are everywhere, actually. It’s so neat the way they can climb trees and walk on fences and jump from branch to branch. They’re much more agile than capybaras. On the other paw, they can’t swim so I don’t think I’d like to switch places with them even for a day.

The Eyes Have It

The eye of Caplin Rous

The above photo is probably the most famous photo of any capybara’s eye, mainly because there are not really any famous photos of capybara eyes. I’d like to change that. Clearly, Caplin Rous had the prettiest eyes ever but all capybaras have lovely, cool, interesting eyes.
