Gari under anesthesia at the vet hospital

This is just going to be a quick update because I am too physically and emotionally drained to do a real blog post.
Please read my original post, Garibaldi is Sick, to get the background for this post.
Gari went to see Dr. Hoppes at Texas A&M University Veterinary School yesterday. A whole team of vets and students worked on him. They did xrays of his teeth. The molars on his lower right side are all messed up. One had a very sharp point that has clearly been cutting the poor little ‘bura’s tongue for some time. There is also some infection in the roots of those molars. Basically, he has the same thing Maple WoMER did. Luckily, because it is his lower jaw, he won’t end up losing an eye.
The vets were able to file down the worst offenders of the points on his teeth but he will need to see a veterinary dentist to get any real work done. As it turns out, the reason capys have such tiny tongues is because that’s all there is room for in their tiny mouths. There’s no room for human fingers or instruments. So, if he needs any major work, it will have to be done from the outside, through the side of his face.
Gari is in a lot of pain right now but we just managed to get some pain medication down him about two hours ago. He finally ate a few bites of endive, one of his favorite foods. We’ve also given him some critical care. Tomorrow, he really needs to start eating.
Gari is also going to be on antibiotics until we get in to see the dentist in about two weeks. Maybe that will clear up the infection. If not, he’ll need to have the offending teeth removed.
So that’s where we are. I’ll post more in a couple of days when I’m not so depressed.

I’m so sorry you have to go through this with another of your babies, and Gari has to go through it at all. I know animals don’t completely understand why these things happen to them. So many hugs!
I’ve never prayed for a capybara. That’s changing tonight.

Try to smile in gratitude that doctors and dentists know how to help our special pets. It could be so much worse. Your love helps him to fight.
Melanie, Gary and family; I am so sorry this is happening. I made a prayer and asked God to send an angel to be by Gari’s side and to carry him through this rough time. Things will get better; believe. Gari needs you happy and he also needs your support. I am sending you some wonderful and postive vibes. At least you’re versed enough to recognize when things aren’t right with Gari. I didn’t know they couldn’t do extractions through the mouth unlike Guinea pigs. it will be ok everything is just certainly crazy right now and we’re pressured under holidays coming up too. Oh wow…thinking…could he really clear a large bag of CC every four days

Melly I’m sure this is just as hard on you as it is Gari. I will be praying for both of you. Make sure you get plenty of rest when you can so you don’t get sick yourself. Your cute little patient needs you.
I really hope that all works out well for Gari! I hope he gets better and the pain meds will allow him to get the nourishment he needs. And I’m thinking about you and what you’re going through. I know first hand how horrible it is when a dear furry family member gets sick. My thoughts are with you and Gari. I sincerely hope everything goes well and he heals quickly.

Oh no, this is so upsetting. And that photo of Gari is pitiful. I hate the thought that he is in so much pain he can’t eat. I hope the meds start working very soon & he gets to feeling better. You both are in my prayers.
