Melly’s Blog:
Yesterday was another terrible day at the vet and today is one of our worst recovery days ever.
Gari had the first molar on his lower right removed. The tooth was dead and decaying inside the bone. In fact, there was a tunnel through the bone from the first molar to the incisor he had taken out last time. This kept the incisor hole from healing up correctly. Instead the whole thing is full of old food and debris. They couldn’t close it this time because in order to clean it out completely, he would need to be intubated, which is a procedure we have not yet faced.
The second molar is also dead and will need to be extraced. That wasn’t done this time because he was already under for a long time and had enough trauma to his mouth for a lifetime, let alone a single vet visit.
The worst thing is that he is unable to stand or walk or even sit up today. Yesterday when we left the vet, he was able to walk fairly well, but he deteriorated during the car drive home. We basically had to lift and drag him into the house. He sat in his sphinx position all night and is still in it now. This is similar to what happened to Caplin Rous when he got neutered. He is not eating, but at least he is drinking. This is especially good since we learned that he has elevated levels of kidney enzymes, which is something new. Drinking lots of water is important for that.
Right now we don’t know exactly why he is having this bad reaction. It could be because of his kidneys or it could be something else. Because of my experience with Caplin, I am hopeful this will pass in a few days. In the meantime I am trying to keep him as comfortable as possible.
I’ll try to get some video and photos later but right now I’m busy just dealing with this, and the fact that we got into a small accident on our drive to the vet’s. No one was hurt but Gari was thrown into the front seat, like he needed more drama.
Please, no prayers or religious references. If they help you, feel free to say them silently or whatever, but they don’t help us and I’d rather not deal with that now.
Oh Gari , you poor thing …I hope you will feel better soon and stop worrying your Melly. You are in my thoughts and I am sending all the feel better vibes your way xxx
I’m sorry to hear that things are not going as smoothly as one would like. The good news is that you are both fighters and survivors so it may just take a bit longer to bounce back.
Sending so much love and strength to all of you. Get well soon, sweet Garibara. We love you. Yoshi and Pip send their wheeks of love. <3
Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear that things were so bad. Both Gari and you can do without more trauma. π
I hope each day will see him feeling better and he will soon be back to his old self. Take care Melly. xx
I’m sorry to read this is happening to you and beautiful Gari <3 Please keep us updated. I hope the next post brings some good news. I admire your strength, Melanie.
I am truly so sorry to hear this!!! Please keep is updated and I hope as time passes Gari recovers. Poor boy!!! Then a car accident to boot. Thinking of you and best, only he best, to Gari. Take care Melly.
So sorry to hear Geri is having a rough time. He’s in good and loving hands. Get well soon Geri. I want to come and meet you. Roni
Very sorry to hear about Gari’s experience. Wish there was more I could do to bring a little comfort to you all. Poor guy. Let me know if you need anything.
If you can get some Bach’s Rescue Remedy it may help with the emotions he’s feeling which can maybe help him get through the pain, and get him eating again. It’s totally holistic, there are no contraindications with anything, — they’ve been around for more than 80 years. They also have remedies that can help with things like fear and depression, which Gari may also have with the pain. You can order them online or if you have a natural food store near you, they probably have them. You would just rub a few drops on the inside of his ear (without letting it run down inside), or his paw pad. So, nothing to stress him more like getting him to take it orally. Although it can certainly go in food and water, I (personally) wouldn’t add anything to his water if you’re getting him to drink water now, which is so important. You don’t want to mess with that. Sending healing and loving thoughts (without religion).

Oh, Gari, you’re supposed to get BETTER after your vet visit, not worse!
I really like my birthday present! You should make Melly get you the same thing because I really like them, and I haven’t even gone swimming with them yet! They would make you feel lots better!
Sending so much love and well wishes to you and Gari. <3
I am so sorry you are not feeling well Gari π I hope that in the next couple days you will be feeling better.. You hang in there little buddy! Melly, you hang in there as well.
This dental surgery is relatively minor, so, the inability to sit or walk may be attributed to the anesthesia. It should be reversible. Anyway, fastest recovery to you, Gari, we send you our hugs!
Good thoughts and wishes for a fast recovery. Poor Gari has been through it, hasn’t he? Such a brave ‘bara! I’m glad he is getting such excellent care. I hope you and Rick are able to rest also.
oh my goodness…our poor Capy friend and his humans who take SUCH good care of him! Sending virtual pets and head skritches…..
Hang in there Gari!!! I hope you’ll be feeling better in no time. Sending love and hugs to you and Melly!!!
I am so sorry you are going through this. The information that has been passed on about capybaras is being put to good use. I have made sure that our young capys will be getting adequate amounts of sunlight and good nutrition especially while they are developing their bones and teeth. I hope you perk up soon and start eating.
I agree with that suggestion for the bach’s rescue remedy.
We’ve used it with both rabbits and guides pigs before and after surgeries. It really can help, it’s like Valium or Xanax for pets, it helps them relax and focus on getting better.
No prayers here, just thinking about you both and hoping things get better. You’ve had a hell of a year, I just keep hoping it turns around soon.
I am so sorry to hear that sweet Gari is going through all this and an accident on top of it. You two have been through enough already. I hope things get better from here on in. Gari, please get better. I am coming to visit you this spring. And Melly is such a strong person and takes such good care of you. Only the best to both of you. <3 Ann, Willow, Sadie, and Maggie…Fishes too.

I’m sending hugs and love from Georgia. ***hugs*** Gary very gently.
Oh Mel and Gari Are you sure you are ok after the accident? Please get better Gari. Many hugs and kisses for both of you.
Poor Gary! Maybe he is sore from being tossed about in the accident. That plus his tooth issues would have me not moving well either. Sending positive vibes to get well soon!
I just commented on Facebook but I came here to read more about Gari’s vet visit. I didn’t know how bad his teeth situation was! π That really sucks! And getting in a car accident is certainly the worst timing in terms of added stress! You ALL deserve to catch a break, and I am thinking very good thoughts for that to happen! *hugs* I’m an agnostic so I don’t do religious references or prayers either, but I do feel that thinking/sending good thoughts & energies can be beneficial, especially when the recipient is aware of that fact! π <3 So please remember how many folks are thinking of you right now and wishing only good things for you and Gari! *hugs again*

Awww it is so sad to hear of the herd times you and Gari are having! Much love to both of you?
Awww it is so sad to hear of the hard times you and Gari are having! Much love to both of you!
Melanie and Garibaldi, I am so sorry to hear about all of this. I’d been pretty much offline all weekend and am just catching up. I am sending positive and healing thoughts to both of you as are so many others — hoping you can feel and catch our vibes.
Oh Miss Smelly! I am devastated to hear Gari is so sick!!! Could this be some aftereffect of the anesthesia?
*headbonks* and get well soon!
Poor Gari. I’ve been through tough times with my pets over the years and it just never gets easier. Best wishes to him and to you!
