At any rate the blog post is actually about the winners of my Capitalisms contest!

   NOT to be mistaken with
   ICAP: Noun: Capybaras favorite restaurant chain where they go to devour the delicious double blueberry pancakes. Short for International Capybaras Annihilating Pancakes. (Sara Beth)

Those are some pretty good winners, although there were many, many great entries in the contest. Melly says having our readers vote is the best idea she ever had since that way we don’t have to pick a winner.

And that is what this contest is about: words used to describe capybaras!

To enter the contest think up a real word or make up a word and then provide a definition for it that involves capybaras. Another example is:

Capture: noun: the experience, anticipated by some fundamentalist Christian capybaras, of meeting capy-Christ midway in the air upon his return to earth. (entry #2)

As with all my contests, the readers are the judges.

There’s no better way to celebrate Caplin Rous’ 4th birthday than to start a new contest. Caplin loved contests, after all, he is the one who invented Rodent Jeopardy. This contest is even better because first prize is a teeshirt with our brand new capybara design on it.

Look at the shirt!

If you’ve read my last couple of blog posts, you know that Stacy Winnick and Angela Dimeglio Mitchell spent a few days with me this week. The surprise is — although I may have mentioned it before — that they were designing a capybara teeshirt! Angela is a superb graphic artist and she did the artwork that you see in the image above. Isn’t it perfect? Melly is the one who came up with the text. Stacy was there to tell the other two how great they were. I was the model. Actually, I am the capybara on the left, Caplin is the one in the middle and Dobby is the one on the right. I love how Angela captured the cute way I wiggle my ears.

Food for thought

As I said, Melly came up with the text for the shirt: 3 capybaras walk into a bar…

What kind of text is that? It’s just the first part of a joke with no punch line! Smelly said that the punch line is just that they’re capybaras and it’s funny enough just to think of three capybaras going into a bar. I believe she is ridiculing me and my entire species. I think the joke needs a real punch line and that’s what this contest is about. To enter the contest, just post a comment with your punch line before Saturday, July 16th. Melly will collect them all and put them into the body of this post. Please keep it PG and PC.

Here’s an example punch line that Angela came up with:

Three capybaras walk into a bar and go to a back room with an undercover duck. The first capybara enters the room, approaches the duck, and claps his hands twice. The duck nods hands him the microfilm. The capybara turns and walks out. The second capybara enters the room, approaches the duck, and claps his hands twice. The duck tips his hat and hands him a coded message in a dark envelope. The capybara turns and walks out. The third capybara enters the room and stands quietly. The duck immediately says, “Arrest this imposter!” and the police come to handcuff the capybara and take him away. Considered a hero, the press and media quickly surround the duck. “Tell us,” they ask, “How did you know he was a fraud?” “Well,” says the undercover duck, “If you’re capy and you know it, clap your hands.”

    So they all get together, and think about what they want to wish for.
    1st Capy asks for a beautiful, warm pond of mud. Poof, there it is.
    2cd Capy asks for a bridge from Texas to Argentina, so he can go home and visit his family.
    The Genie tells him that is totally, completed, can’t be done impossible, and goes on to the 3rd Capy.
    This Capy asked, not for a pond, nor a bridge, he only wanted ONE thing, and that was to be able to understand all women.
    The Genie, looks at the third Capy, then to the second, and he asks the second Capy, if he wants a two lane or four lane bridge. - MissKitty
25. Three capybaras walk into a bar. The bartender stops them saying “Hey, this is a fancy place! You need a tie to get served here.” Since this bar served the best salad around, all three really wanted to get in. They head back out to search for some neckties, but after a long, hard search only come up with two neckties and some jumper cables. Deciding it’ll have to do, two of the capybaras put on the neckties and the third makes a nice bowtie with the jumper cables. They return to the bar where the first two capybaras get in no problem. The bartender says to the third. “That’s not a tie, I can’t let you in.” The third ‘bara responds. “Oh come on! I’ve been dying to try your salad all day and I’m tired from searching high and low for a tie. Just give me a break, will you?” Deciding that maybe he was too harsh on the poor capybara, the bartender relents. “Ok, you can come. But just don’t start anything.” – Ann

Hi all! I am in need of a logo for the ROUS Foundation for Capybara Veterinary Medicine. As some of you may know, the Foundation was started after Caplin Rous died unexpectedly on January 4th, 2011, a day that will burn forever in my heart.

After Caplin’s death I wanted to do something to try to prevent such tragedies from happening again. The first step toward that is knowledge and it turns out there is surprisingly little knowledge about capybara veterinary care, diseases and environmental susceptibilities. I started the ROUS Foundation in conjunction with Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine to develop a knowledge center of capybara. It has taken a while to get things going but soon everything should be in place.

However, as everyone knows, we can’t have a Foundation without a logo! That’s where you come in. Create your own version of a ROUS Foundation logo and email it me using the “contact” tab at the top of this page. I will put all the entries that I receive before June 4th up here and then open voting to the public. Get your creative hats on!

Capybara made from potatoes, raisins, toothpicks and clay

I am convinced that my new home is an insane asylum and that Melly is the patient/inmate. She decided that we need to have a contest to promote the new capybara puzzles (virtually all featuring Caplin Rous, one featuring Dobby Winnick and NONE featuring me). I can go along with that. It’s a good cause, The ROUS Foundation, and I think arts and crafts is a fun kind of contest.

But then Melly decided that she had to make one herself to kind-of show people what to do. ZOMG! Do you see that thing she made? People! People! Please do not base your entries on that. As soon as I can I am going to mash that thing under my paws. Then Melly had the nerve to say that her crafty capybara was me because it is not cute enough to be Caplin! I admit it is not cute enough to be Caplin but it is also not cute enough to be me! It isn’t cute enough to be ANY capybara! Even the least cute capybara is infinitely cuter than that.

Okay, okay. I have to calm down. Breathe. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

I’m better now.

If you know me, you know I love a good contest, especially when it involves photos of me. So I decided to kick off a quick contest during the holidays since, I figure, people will have a lot of time on their hands.

This contest is LOL Capybara. In case there’s anyone out there who doesn’t understand the LOL concept, what you do is create a funny caption for the photo. I do not require LOL Speak (and if you don’t know what that is, you are blissfully ignorant) because I value good language and grammar. Nevertheless, as with all my contests, the readers are the judges and they may well love LOL Speak, so do what you will.

A Capybara’s View of the World

The capybara’s eye sees the world differently.

Peeking over the lid of the swamp like the orbs of a dreaded crocodile
The dank aspect of them, squinted into mascara lines and longest lashes,
Watch for death through innocence.

We sit two feet, three feet, in a Jeep high above the marsh world
Immune to its dangers, removed from the essence of its beauty
Watching for death that is not ours.

Beneath the surface of floating hyacinth, scent and scented,
The undulating current suspends the weak and the strong
Waiting for nature to sort them into bins.

A cry! The shriek of an infant torn from its mother’s safety!
The wailing of loss. The gasp of surprise from those in the Jeep.
But it’s only a capybara after all.

The capybara’s eye sees the world differently.

As you can see, my owner wrote a dumb poem about capybaras. That got her thinking that virtually anyone could write a dumb poem about capybaras. So she decided to have another contest. This is a poetry contest.  Here are the rules.

• Poem must contain the word capybara
• Poem must not be more than 100 lines long
• Contest ends on September 11th, 2010
• No profanity, must be kid-friendly

The poem does not have to be in English. Including a photo to illustrate your poem probably helps.

Prizes are:

Oh to be one of the lucky people,
to own a capybara.
I’ve seen the pics, and silently wished
for a girl that Id name Clara.

Id take her swimming every day,
and take pictures of her splashing.
And with her wet coat shaken dry,
I bet she’d be quite dashing.

Id take her for walks down by the school,
to show all the little children.
I’d let them pet her, I’m sure she would love.
all the chatter and attention.

Sometimes I would take her to the park,
and walk down by the river.
Im sure she would be quite a spectacle,
And make all the little ducks quiver.

At home at night I would give her a snack,
and then its time for bed.
We cuddle together under the blankets,
her very own pillow to rest her head.

I first discovered you through the Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue’s
announcement of its Fifth Annual Hoedown,
an event in support of your little cousins, the cavies.
For months, I waited patiently for you to arrive.
When you did, I was not disappointed.
The people flocked to you.
You remained stoic and good natured.
Patiently, you let the children fawn over you.

The adults couldn’t help themselves too.
“What is that?” The uniformed exclaimed!
A Capybara – A Rodent of Unusual Size!
Thoughts of Buttercup and Wesley came to mind.
Alas, you are not of a fire swamp,
nor would you want to “get” any of us.
A gentle giant with stylish bandanas
who loves his yogurt, swimming, and being cool.

Caplin, you are the most famous Capy,
and you bring awareness for all rodent kind.
I will never forget you,
and I will continue to sing your praises
for as long as my faculties allow me
the pleasure of doing so.

My FaceBook friend, Elly Fox, made this great photo of me standing with her and her boyfriend Dim Dim Dim (weird name but sometimes you just can’t explain humans).

I really like that photo. It makes me think I could be with all of my friends. Wouldn’t that be great? Well, maybe I can’t do it in real life but I can do it in Photoshop. So I am making my first GiantHamster.com Contest. Let me explain the rules.
