January 4th, 2013 is the two year anniversary of the death of Caplin Rous, the World’s Most Famous Capybara. It hurts as much as if it were yesterday. But that is not what I want to talk about. I want to use this most depressing anniversary to highlight some of the good that Caplin Rous is still doing in the world.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the ROUS Foundation for Capybara Veterinary Medicine (RF) during the past year! The RF was founded in Caplin Rous’ memory and each and every contribution helps to make his life more meaningful. Thanks to your purchases and donations, I was able to donate $1000 to the RF for 2012! That money came from purchases from the Capybara Madness store ($1 is donated for each item purchased except for the raku pawprints where the entire amount is donated), along with a few fees that Garibaldi earned from appearances (thanks especially to Forest Trail Elementary!) and to direct donations through my site.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The RF currently has $3,352.66, which is enough to hopefully get some real research done this year, or potentially to help a few capybaras in distress.
So far the RF has helped with a few necropsies on deceased capybaras as well as performing stool analysis for a sick pet capybara.
I am hoping that this year will see some research or data gathering done in the area of anesthesia in capybaras.
Note that while Garibaldi has had more vet visits this year than I would like due to his teeth, and that this will probably continue into the foreseeable future, ROUS Foundation funds DO NOT go to fund his medical care. I would consider this a conflict of interest. However, your purchases from the Capybara Madness store (aside from the $1 donation to RF) are used to support Garibaldi’s care and feeding.
Capy New Year to all of our friends! Let’s make 2013 the best year ever!
