In Memoriam: Dobby Winnick (Part 1)

Dobby Winnick

Melanie’s Post:

This is an especially hard memorial post. Not only was Dobby a superior capybara, but he was also Caplin Rous’ younger brother. And if that weren’t enough, he died on July 9th, one day before Caplin Day, which would have been Caplin’s 11th birthday. Dobby, whose birthday was Feb. 14, 2009, was 9.5 years old when he died.

One of the services provided by the ROUS Foundation for Capybara Veterinary Medicine (RF) is the performance of necropsies on capybaras. We do this because without knowing why capybaras die, we can’t know how to keep them alive. Dobby lived to a respectable age, but of course we would have liked him to live longer. Forever, if possible.

Preliminary results of Dobby’s necropsy show that he died from hepatitis. This is the same thing that killed Caplin Rous. Since they were full brothers, this is suspicious, but without more data it is hard to draw solid conclusions. Please consider making a donation.

In this post we will continue our exploration of Dobby’s habitat. As you’ll recall, in Part 2 we focused on the backyard. In this post we’ll finish up some stuff in the back and then move to the front yard. Continue reading “Dobby(e) Trip: Part 3” »

Dobby(e) Trip: Part 1

Prince Dobalob

Prince Dobalob

I’m starting this post with a cute photo of Prince Dobalob, aka Dobby(e) Winnick. Isn’t he adorable? Well, get over it because the whole rest of this post is not going to be about Dobby at all, it’s going to be about my journey to get to him. The journey starts in Buda, TX, detours through Los Angeles, and ends in Seattle with the famous capybara. This installment is about the LA section of the trip. I’d like to promise that it will be interesting, even though it is not about capybaras, but you will have to judge that for yourselves. Continue reading “Dobby(e) Trip: Part 1” »

Getting Better

Out for a walk in the sun

Out for a walk in the sun

Melly’s Blog:

Just a quick update on how Garibaldi Rous is doing, which is surprisingly well! He is a resilient little capybara if he is anything! In the photo above, you can see that he went out for a walk around the house today. Now that Stacy Winnick has finally left, it seems we can rid ourselves of the Seattle weather that she brought with her. Today the sun was out and it got into the low 60s, perfect for Gari’s first serious venture outside since he lost his tooth. He didn’t spend too much time outside today but tomorrow will be even warmer and I am going to move his little wading pool back outside so I think he’ll enjoy that.
