Pond Dreams

My dream

I have a dream. It is just a little dream not one of those big dreams like “world peace” or “visit the Amazon” that could never come true. I have just a little dream about my pond.

I hope you have read my previous blog post, What Happened to My Pond? that I posted back in January, if not, now would be a good time. It turns out that Melly has a vendetta against my pond. She seems to feel that it is possible to have too many plants in the pond, specifically irises.

As you can see from the above photo, the pond has always had a large iris population. I mean, that photo was taken in ancient times and there were still plenty of irises.

Okay, I have to admit that it looks like Caplin Rous could actually swim in the pond. I have never been able to do that. So maybe Melly has a point, maybe it would be nice to have open water in the pond and not just mud. Plus, I suppose Nessie, my snapping turtle co-pet, would like it.

It looks different without most of the irises

As Melly’s work progressed on the pond, I learned some interesting things about it. For example, I learned that it had a rubber liner. I also learned there was supposed to be a ring of bricks around the outside. And the pond was in the shape of a fish! (I am standing in the thin part of the fish with the head in front and the tail behind.) I also learned that it was deeper than I expected.

I wonder if I can get to China through here

It was a lot deeper than I expected! Look! I can practically disappear into it! All of that was solid iris roots!

Fully de-irised pond

So I guess Melly had a point, maybe the irises had gotten a little out of hand. Maybe I will like the pond better with water in it.

This weekend Sheldon and Philip are going to come over and help put the new liner in. The next photo that you see of me in my pond should look like the one at the top of this post (only not photoshopped). I have to admit, I am pretty excited!
